With Jesus. For Jesus. To Jesus.

The House by the Side of the Road
Sam Walter Foss
There are hermit souls that live withdrawn
In the peace of their self-content;
There are souls, like stars, that swell apart,
In a fellowless firmament;
There are pioneer souls that blaze their paths
Where highways never ran;
But let me live by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
Where the race of men go by;
The men who are good and the men who are bad,
As good and as bad as I.
I would not sit in the scorner's seat,
Or hurl the cynic's ban;
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
I see from my house by the side of the road,
By the side of the highway of life,
The men who press with the ardor of hope,
The men who are faint with the strife.
But I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears
Both parts of an infinite plan;
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
Where the race of men go by;
They are good, they are bad, they are weak,
They are strong,
Wise, foolish - so am I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat
Or hurl the cynic's ban? -
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
For any locals, Michael at the Oaks of Mamre is in need of blankets to hand out. You can contact him or me if you have any available. Also, if interested, you can read more about the Catholic Worker movement here. And the Orthodox Peace Fellowship here. Peace and goodness.

So good. Be a friend to man.
It seems we might have reached similar conclusions. I feel as if right now, with children, school and just life I am unable to do large and important things for Christ. But I AM able to take a meal to a sick friend, make flowers for a funeral and call people just to tell them I am praying for them. I am able to do small things for Christ and that is enough right now.
I agree with Kris - lovely poem. Be a friend to man (or woman).
The little things make all the difference, don't they? Watching a friend's baby, delivering brownies to neighbors for the holiday. That's what I've been doing recently.
And commenting on my friend's blogs. :)
Hugs,

That's an awesome poem, Beth. I really needed to read this today.
Btw, speaking of generosity, thanks Kris for the plum cake. It was delicious!
Yes, love it Beth. All for Christ.
